The Diverse Pathways Approach is a strengths-led, neurodiversity-affirming way of noticing, understanding and supporting children’s development.
It moves away from beginning with delay, deficit and how closely a child matches a standardised pathway. Instead, we begin with curiosity, intuition, relational knowing and careful attention to each child’s play, communication, emotions, energy, sensory experiences and ways of being.
This does not mean overlooking disability, distress or the need for support. It means ensuring that support is meaningful, attuned and designed to improve children’s quality of life, rather than moving them closer to an idea of “normal.”
Diverse Pathways is underpinned by the Neurodiversity Paradigm, which recognises human variation as natural, inevitable and expected. We therefore need an education system that expands and adapts to include difference, rather than trying to make every child fit within a narrow idea of “normal.”
